Eric and I did two things this past weekend that we rarely do: 1) We spent the entire weekend together* and 2) We actually got out of our sweatpants and dressed up to go out for dinner.
I know, right? Are we feeling okay???
Only a miracle could cause us to do this–and perhaps it was a miracle–it was our one-year anniversary April 2 : P
Since Eric had to work a 24-hour shift, he didn’t come home til 7:30 the morning of our anniversary. And he surprised me with this lovely bouquet of stargazer lilies–my fave.
We then packed up the car and set off to San Diego (dropping our pup off with my parents).
We checked into the lovely Hyatt Hotel with a gorgeous view of the San Diego Harbor. Although it was overcast the entire day, it didn’t hamper our mood.
And since we didn’t have a cake at our wedding, we popped open the champagne bottle we bought on our honeymoon:
Can you guess which photo we kept trying to recreate? I’ll give you a hint–it’s in my blog header.
Now that Prince William and Kate Middleton are getting married, I keep trying to sound more regal, so I use the word “lovely” a lot.I digress.
Our restuarant was literally 0.6 miles from our hotel. I didn’t want to walk because I was wearing heels (leopard heels, rawr!).
We decided to take one of those bicycle guys because “hey, let’s support the little guy, right?” (as opposed to mean taxi guys).
Guess how much this guy charged us for the 0.6 miles?$40! And he still expected tip!
(Obviously, the happy pic above was taken before we paid)
The worst part was I asked him how much it was going to be because his sign said “$60 maximum per person” and he said that was for a tour of the whole city and “don’t worry about it”…
Who would have thought it would have been $20 per person for a 0.6 mile ride?
Moral of this story: ALWAYS DECIDE THE PRICE BEFORE YOU HOP ON.
Expensive lesson learned.
(and no we did not tip that jerk for the 3-minute ride).
(Sidenote: Eric doesn’t have much of a neck, apparently, so he always looks like he has a double chin in photos, but I promise he looks much better in real life.
This was just a bad photo. Sticking up for my man).
As soon as we stepped inside our restaurant, I had to put the $40 outrage behind me. We ate here and it was some of the best seafood I’ve ever had.
I tried oysters for the first time–slimy little suckers. Then we shared a crab cake–best damn crab cake I’ve ever had. Scallops? Melted in my mouth. Fresh bread? Piled on the butter.
The only thing that wasn’t on the best of the best list was the Baked Alaska dessert.
It looked cool, but it was a bit strong on the liquor.
No complaints here though. It was free because of our anniversary. Oh, the perks.
So because we were in San Diego–and we were all dressed up–and we never get to go out, we had talked all day about going out at night.
Now, let me remind you, we never go out. We are 26 and 28, respectively. On the few weekend nights when Eric is not working, we’re either spending it with family or chilling on our couch with Netflix and pizza.
But it was our anniversary, we had to go out, right?
So even though we were incredibly stuffed and tired after dinner, we forced ourselves to walk around the Gaslamp District and at least get one beer.
We didn’t even make it through half a beer. Eric started feeling sick, so we grabbed a cab home to the hotel, and passed out.
Yup. 9:41 pm and we were in the hotel.
What can we say? We tried to be cool.
And that was how we spent our anniversary.
I don’t really want to discuss the cost. Remember my mantra? “We can afford this, we can afford this.” I’m stickin’ to it, folks…
*the reason we never spend weekends together is because Eric usually has to work 1 or both of the weekend days–not because we don’t like each other. I hate his work schedule. Since Jan. 1, we’ve spent exactly 2 weekends together. The other was Seattle. I detest his work schedule. Abhor it. End rant.

Love that you asked someone to take a picture of you both recreating the famous picture turned into a statue…you look just like it! Your navy blue dress is just gorgeous on you and what a beautiful couple! Happy Anniversary!
Liesl 🙂
I can’t believe it has been a year! Wow. So happy for you two! I think it was a well deserved weekend for the two of you and I’m glad you did it! Here’s to many more!
Happy Anniversary! It sounds like a great evening. At first I thought “I must have passed her walking in the gas lamp” until I saw the clock. I was definitely there after 11. 🙂
You really need to wait till Groupon has the Canvas on Demand offer again and have that LIFE cover photo enlarged! That would definitely be hanging in my living room!
Happy Anniversary! You looked lovely! 🙂
And from one neckless person to another… I HEAR YA! lol
Happy anniversary! Total bummer that you guys never get weekends together, but I’m glad you got this one and made the most of it! (And hey, going to bed early is totally legit.) 🙂
Congrats on 1 year! when i say i cant believe we have been married for 6 months my mom laughs at me and says wait till it is 28 years!
PS. Love the dress!
Since Jan 1…I think we’ve spent 2 or 3 weekends together. I work both Sat and Sun. I detest my schedule but I like how it enables me to save a hell of lot more money than I could otherwise.
You two look gorgeous and happy in these pics! Happy one year anniversary! That really stinks about the cab ride, but it sounds like the weekend was amazing and spending time with the man you love is worth every penny.
Congrats my love! 😉
Happy 1 year!!!! That is awesome, and looks like you had a great weekend! Whenever we try and be cool we end up in bed by 10pm too, so you aren’t alone!!
Wow, it’s been a year already?! Happy anniversary! You guys are so cute. Sounds like a *lovely* celebration! 😉
Happy Anniversary! I can’t believe my one year is in less then two weeks! Looks like you guys had fun though! We are heading to Catalina… we are the same though, it’s tough for us to stay out past 9. LOL

Happy Anniversary!
HOT STUFF! You guys look awesome!!! Gorgeous. I love the pics and your attempt to go out after dinner. I would totally be the same…M can stay out all night, he is more of a night owl than me! Hey, you made an attempt 😉 Congrats you guys!
You can afford it, and you DESERVE IT! Happy anniversary. Please promise you’ll enlarge the navy pier make out pic into poster size and hang it in your living room.
Oh and I love the champagne instead of cake thing. I mean, I love cake, but there’s something much more “special” about a good glass of champagne vs. some old freezer-burned cake?
LE is Law Enforcement 🙂
So glad you had a good time!! I just have to say–you are ADORABLE!! Reading your blog makes me smile, so thank you for that!!
I’m glad you had a good time despite the $40 ride! I completely understand the frustration with your hubby’s work schedule. My husband is in LE and works nights so I hardly see him sometimes. Additionally, they work all weekends for two months and then have weekends off for two months, so those two months that he’s working weekends (right now) I feel super lame because I hardly do anything!
Looks like a great trip! And I love your dress!
